FAQs

What is plastic CNC machining?

Plastic CNC machining is a subtractive manufacturing process that uses computer-controlled milling and turning equipment to cut engineering plastic stock into precise custom parts. It is well suited for prototypes, fixtures, low-volume production, and end-use components that require tight tolerances, clean edges, and specific material properties such as transparency, low friction, electrical insulation, chemical resistance, or high temperature performance.

Which plastics can be CNC machined?

Common CNC machined plastics include PEEK, Nylon, ABS, Acrylic, Acetal (POM), HDPE, Polycarbonate, Polypropylene, PTFE, and Ultem. Each plastic has different strengths: PEEK and Ultem handle high heat, PTFE provides extremely low friction and chemical resistance, Acrylic and Polycarbonate offer clarity, Acetal provides stable precision fits, and Nylon or HDPE work well for durable wear components.

How does CNC plastic machining compare with injection molding?

CNC plastic machining is best for prototypes, bridge production, low-to-medium volume parts, complex geometry, and jobs that need fast design changes without tooling. Injection molding is more economical for very high volumes after the mold has been made, but it requires higher upfront tooling cost and longer lead time. CNC machining also allows parts to be cut directly from engineering-grade sheet, plate, rod, or block stock.

What tolerances can plastic CNC machined parts hold?

Typical plastic CNC machined parts can hold +/-0.005 in to +/-0.001 in depending on material, geometry, wall thickness, stock condition, and part size. High-performance plastics can achieve tight results with proper tooling, fixturing, stress control, and heat management, but plastics expand, absorb moisture, and relax differently than metals, so tolerance planning should match the material and application.
